Q: What are the benefits of portable SPR over ELISA, if any?
A: Compared to ELISA, SPR is a label-free technique where you can expect to use significantly less reagents than ELISA, not to mention better for detecting weak binding interactions. And with portable SPR, you can monitor the biomolecular interaction in real-time, with results ready in < 1h versus sometimes hours or even days with ELISA. Furthermore, you can in fact use portable SPR to do intermediate step-by-step optimizations for ELISA since SPR and ELISA share similar prep steps. The lengthy ELISA can then be performed as final validation, if needed.
Q: Can we deposite any other layer on this gold layer in this device?
A: Depending on which layer you are referring to. A nanoparticle layer may work but it will shift the SPR minimum to higher wavelength so our standard detector may need to be swapped out with a detector in the 600-900 nm range. For example, this shift of wavelength may occur with a graphene layer. Right now, our standard SPR detection range is 500-700 nm.
